Library Lesson Updates!!!

And just what have pre-school through 5th been doing in the library this year?????

They have been very busy! The preschoolers have been enjoying stories ranging from books about self, to nursery ryhmes and song stories, to seasonal books about Halloween, Thanksgiving , and Christmas. The Kindergarten students have been learning how to locate books on the library shelves by reviewing their alphabet. So far they have learned about books up to the letter K and how every book lives on a certain shelf with it's neighbors that have the same last name. ( Such as letter B or C or J.) They have also listened to stories about Clifford, seasonal stories and books about school. The first graders have been reading about Mr. Wiggle, a library bookworm who tells them all about the library and books. They have learned how to take care of books and how to use their manners in the library. The second graders have been reviewing library skills and have begun to learn about authors. So far they have learned about Kevin Henkes and Tomie DePaola. The third graders have recently been learning about fairy tales and the especially the characters of the three pigs and wolves. They will be completing a report about a wolf or pig using research books and encyclopedias. The fourth graders have been reviewing library skills by doing a scavenger hunt where they had to go to different stations in the library and practice different skills such as putting books in ABC order or finding information in an atlas. The fifth graders have been learning about fairy tales from different countries and will be writing their own fairy tale after Christmas. As you can tell, we have been very busy in the library learning skills and enjoying books!!!!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Once again our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!! A great big thank you to every student, parent, grandparent and teacher who bought books and supported reading!!! I also owe a debt of gratitude to the many parents who helped me set up the fair, run the fair and take down the fair. It is a massive undertaking and one that would have taken me many more hours had I attempted it by myself. Stay tuned for a detailed update on the amount of profit the library received and the new books acquired. Once again... thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

AR STORE UPDATE

AR STORE UPDATE:
We had our first AR store of the year on Wednesday October 21st. Students were excited about cashing in their points. In order to come to the store, students must achieve their quarter goal. Once at the store, they have the opportunity to purchase items from two different tables of varying values. They also have a chance to put their names in for one of four raffles in which other items may be won. All who attended this quarter seemed to be happy with their purchases. Those who could not attend this quarter are going to read, read, read so that they may attend next quarter. Our next AR store will be after Christmas!
It can become quite costly to stock the AR store with different items throughout the year. This year, in particular, we are working without a budget so any donations are greatly needed and appreciated. We have some stock from last year, but clearly not enough to offer enough variety for the next three quarters. Snacks are a favorite of the students. ( Chips, candy, etc.) If you can send any snack items in they would definitely be used. We also could use other novelty items that students of all ages would like. We prefer new items still in packages that you might be able to find at clearance sales, dollar stores, etc. However, we are also willing to accept gently used items that might still be in original packaging, etc. If you have access to items such as movie coupons, etc. those would also be appreciated. It is always amazing to see what students choose! Just when you think you know what they like, they will choose something you never would have guessed they would like! Thanks for your support. If you could see the excitement on the faces of the children who cash in their points you would know that any donations will make a difference!
